NBA/WNBA: Why joining Canis Hoopus was a no-brainer

Editor’s Note: Please welcome Mitchell Hansen to Canis Hoopus! We will play an important role in both our Wolves and Lynx coverage. He’s a veteran of the content game who’s been an amazing writer for years, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to add him to our incredible team. He offers a unique perspective as someone who covers both teams and has worked for both Wolves and Lynx, so he’s the perfect addition to our lineup!

For as long as I can remember I’ve been a fan of basketball and play or tune in to watch games as much as possible. Growing up, I would often race home after school, have a quick dinner, throw on my #21 Kevin Garnett jersey, and immediately go downstairs to tune in to whatever game was on the TV (usually a game of the Minnesota Timberwolves). shooting baskets on a small plastic ring in my parents’ basement.

It’s safe to say that I’ve always been obsessed with basketball, growing up roughly mid to late in Garnett’s tenure with Wolves before joining the Boston Celtics (we don’t need to talk about the years after that departure). . Being so sinfully uncoordinated and not good enough to actually play the game, I decided to do the next best thing – follow and cover basketball while writing as much about it as I can.

I went from trying to play the sport to covering it and have been fortunate enough to write for a few websites and publications throughout my career that have allowed me to share my obsession with basketball. Having made a few more stops up to this point, I have decided to take on a new role at a website which I am delighted to announce that I am joining Canis Hoopus.

With Canis, I’ll be helping out with coverage of the Timberwolves throughout the NBA season, while also partnering with coverage of the Minnesota Lynx during the WNBA year. To say I’m excited and excited to join this team would be an understatement and I can’t wait to share my excitement for this sport with all of you as much as possible.

With that in mind, allow me to introduce myself, give you some background on who I am, what you can expect from me and why I’m excited to join this talented team.

Please let me introduce myself

“My name is Hov, oh, H-to-the-OV.”

OK I am sorry. I’ve always wanted to do that. Get used to pointless, unfunny attempts at making jokes on this side of me from time to time and prepare to be disappointed each time. Single. Time.

With that out of the way, allow me to introduce myself and tell you a little bit about myself. As of this writing, I have been writing in the sports world for almost 10 years and enjoying every minute of it.

I grew up in Central Minnesota and later attended college at St. Cloud State University (Go Huskies!). I got my start in the world of sportswriting when I worked as a part-time sportswriter for the local newspaper, the St. Cloud Times. After working in that role throughout college, I had what I consider to be my “big break” in 2016 when I was hired by the Wolves and Lynx organization as their web editorial staff for a little over a year became. For me this was a once in a lifetime opportunity to work internally for an organization I grew up in and get the chance to be with both Wolves and Lynx on a daily basis.

I’ve always had an interest in writing about the NBA, but I quickly developed a strong interest in covering the WNBA, and it didn’t hurt that the best team in the league and one of the best teams in the history of the WNBA in Minnesota resided this time. This role gave me the assurance that I wanted to do that and I am forever grateful for this opportunity, which opens doors for me to get to where I am now. It also didn’t hurt to be part of the 2017 Lynx WNBA Championship team, which will forever be one of the best moments and times of my career.

Aside from these experiences, I’ve had the pleasure of working and writing for other websites and publications that have somehow put up with my terrible puns and jokes while continuing to cover the great sport of basketball. I’ve worked for sites like Zone Coverage and FanSided, which primarily cover the NBA and WNBA, and also currently write for Winsidr, which covers the WNBA nationally, as well as Lynx, and Sports Betting Dime, which covers the NBA and WNBA reported from the perspective of betting. All of these sites have given me opportunities to produce content that is not only informative and static in focus, but also stories that are more column and human interest style content.

All of these experiences, although I will continue with some of them, lead me to this next opportunity at Canis – an opportunity I am excited to embrace and share with all of you throughout the NBA and WNBA seasons.

Why canis hoopus?

To simply answer this question, why canis, I say why not? To be honest, I’m lucky enough to take this opportunity by joining a team of crazy talented writers and reporters that I’ve been following since I entered the world of sports writing.

Over the years, you’ll become acquainted with the local writing and reporter scene in the Twin Cities area while reporting for a team. There’s a decent crew of writers and reporters in the metro area and beyond, but it feels small and close-knit at the same time. That was the case with this crew at Canis, as well as others working for other outlets. I’ve even worked elsewhere with some of the writers who are currently on the Canis team, just another reason that made the decision to join the site a natural choice.

Whether it’s wolves or lynx reporting, the entire team at Canis is one that rivals the best, both in terms of actual reporting and the writers who complement the team and provide content on a daily basis. I have followed their work for many years and I have had the opportunity to either follow or know them over the years. I can tell you one thing – the team put together at Canis to cover the wolves and lynx is one of the most talented writing groups I have ever been a part of. I’m happy that they want to welcome me to the team and I can’t wait to contribute to the coverage and content to the best of my ability.

The Canis team is impressive, and I’m not just saying that because this uncoordinated, pun-loving, and horribly joke-spewing lunatic is now joining the group. I am fortunate to join such a talented group of writers and we hope you enjoy the content we will be providing throughout the year.

My joining the Canis team is not why you have chosen to read or follow the coverage on these pages, but I hope I can contribute to the collective group that keeps you coming back. If I can bring a new following on board, that’s icing on the cake. This decision was a no-brainer for me and I’m happy to be aboard this talented team. Growing up, I’m here to enjoy basketball as much as possible. I hope you will join me and our entire team as we do this together throughout the NBA and WNBA season.
