The tech world has been rocked by mass layoffs like giants Metaowned by Elon Musk Twitter and Amazon bleed jobs amid economic uncertainty.

“Tech companies of all shapes and sizes reorganize, carefully gauge spending, and eventually lay off employees,” said Erin Lau, director for service operations at Insperity, a human resources consulting firm.

Organizations are constantly in disruption mode, so today’s job requirements can change tomorrow.

This is making for a tight labor market that is “overflowing with unemployed professionals and qualified candidates,” she added.

Along with the intense competition, job seekers also face the challenge of acquiring “adaptive skills” to meet the demands of a rapidly changing tech industry, said LinkedIn careers expert Pooja Chhabria.

“Companies are constantly in disruption mode, so today’s job requirements can change tomorrow. Employers are therefore very interested in hiring agile tech talent – they not only meet a specific need of today, but have future-proof skills to respond to the demands of the future,” she added.

CNBC does it spoke to career experts who have tips for laid-off techs looking for new jobs in a challenging economy.

1. Invest in skills development

Skills are now “the new currency” at work, and companies are taking a skills-based approach to hiring, Chhabria said.

“In the last year, 40% of recruiters on LinkedIn explicitly used skills data to find talent, which is a 20% increase from the previous year,” she added.

“What’s even more telling is that these employees are 60% more likely to find a successful hire because of this change in approach.”

To differentiate yourself from the competition out there, Chhabria suggested looking for “growing fields to invest in.”

To get into the job or industry you want, you often don’t need to completely overhaul your skills and may already have similar skills needed for a career change.

“For example, we’ve seen big investments in artificial intelligence and machine learning, so skills like SQL, Python and AWS are all in-demand skills in software and IT with significant growth since 2015.”

Whether you’re looking to update your skills or potentially make a career move, don’t neglect your transferrable skills, she added.

“To move into the job or industry you want, you often don’t need to completely overhaul your skills and you may already have similar skills needed for a career change.”

Setting up job alerts can also help pinpoint learning opportunities, said Vicki Salemi, a Monster.com careers expert.

How to lead through layoffs and manage affected employees

“Start with the end in mind. Look through the job descriptions to look at the skills and requirements of the jobs you are seeking to fill in the gaps,” she explained.

“For example, if there’s a new certification in tech that you don’t have but looks like you should have and it’s a growing trend, then see if you can track it.”

2. Time is of the essence

The good news is that there are still tech opportunities in “countless industries,” Salemi said.

Chhabria added that there are currently more than 3.5 million vacancies in Asia Pacific in sectors not limited to technology such as professional services, retail, healthcare and financial services.

While there are jobs, pundits told CNBC Make It that time is of the essence.

“When I worked in corporate recruitment, I usually saw a drop in applications in December, even though we were actively hiring,” Salemi said.

“Job seekers will have less competition when applying as the majority of people pause their search until January. Do not wait.”

LinkedIn’s Chhabria agreed, saying there are still “many companies” hiring now and that being first to apply gives applicants an added benefit.

“LinkIn [data] shows that you’re four times more likely to get hired if you apply in the first 10 minutes, so set up job alerts to notify you whenever a job that matches your criteria is posted, and apply as soon as possible,” she added.

Aside from highlighting technical skills on your resume, soft skills such as time management and customer service are also crucial.

“In this uncertain environment, employers are also placing more emphasis on soft skills such as problem solving, communication and resilience. These are key skills that tech workers must also demonstrate, as we work in a hybrid environment with teams distributed worldwide.”

Chhabria acknowledged that it’s natural to feel anxious and lost after a layoff, and said “proactively confronting” those feelings is the best way to address them.

“It can also be helpful to be part of a community and seek help by talking to others in a similar situation,” she added.

“Start by reaching out to your network… [that] can be the first step in opening the door to connections and conversations with your current contacts who may be able to offer advice, support or introductions that can help you with hiring.”
